Nominet, the non-profit body responsible for controlling all net addresses ending in the UK, has withdrawn its plans to introduce theshorter .uk domain name with added security.
Nominet, which started a three-month consultation in October last year, said it received feedback from a range of stakeholders but there was not a consensus of support for the proposal.
The objective of raising security was welcomed, but many disagreed with the proposed approach, suggesting that standards should be raised across the whole of the namespace, Nominet said.
The group added that there was support for one of security features proposed, known as Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), but there was scepticism about whether the proposed trustmark would be effective.
Nominet will now draw a revised proposal which will focus on registration verification along with measures to improve security and pricing.
The group said it will also explore a revised phased release mechanism based largely on the prior registrations of domains in existing third levels within .uk and in which contention different applicants for the same domain name should be reduced or eliminated.
